Before you can effectively maintain your gums and teeth you must first understand the factors that cause disease and deterioration of the bone and tissue that support your teeth.
Periodontists are dentists who focus their practice on diagnosing, treating, and improving periodontal health concerns for patients. Periodontal professionals are responsible for treating gum disease, restoring and rebuilding lost gum and bone tissue, and providing tooth replacement services with dental implant procedures.
One way to measure the health of your gums and teeth is to measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth. This process is called periodontal probing. Healthy teeth and gums should measure between 1-3mm in depth. At this depth you will easily be able to clean and maintain the area with good brushing and flossing. This is the depth that we strive to maintain at all times.
When bacteria are left underneath your gums without being cleaned effectively it begins to cause the gum tissue that supports the tooth to deteriorate. When this happens the tissue will lose its attachment to the root surface of the tooth and cause deeper pockets. Anything deeper than a 3mm pocket will be too deep for you to effectively clean the pocket with simple brushing and flossing.
